OSAS and snoring

Poor sleep due to snoring or obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) can have a major impact on your health and quality of life. At Tandartsen Weeshuis, we offer specialized care with MRA (mandibular repositioning appliance) braces for both people with sleep apnea and people who snore without apnea.

What is OSAS?

With OSAS, breathing repeatedly stops or decreases during sleep. This can lead to complaints such as:

  • daytime fatigue
  • concentration problems
  • headache upon waking
  • increased risk of cardiovascular disease

OSAS is diagnosed by a doctor, usually through a sleep study.

Initial consultation: assessment and referral letter

During the initial consultation, we will assess whether your dental and oral situation is suitable for fitting an MRA brace. An MRA brace makes demands on the teeth, gums and jaw joints.

Do you have a referral for OSAS? If so, please bring the referral letter from your doctor to this initial consultation. This referral letter is important to start the treatment process properly and to be able to organize the reimbursement of the MRA brace correctly.

Sometimes we advise having dental care performed first, for example in the case of loose teeth, inflammation, or other areas of concern. We can only responsibly fit the MAD brace once your teeth are sufficiently stable. We always do this in consultation with you and, if necessary, with your own dentist.

MRA brace for OSAS

An MRA brace is a removable brace that holds the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep. This keeps the airways more open and reduces or eliminates apnoea.

Within our practice, MRA braces are made by specialized dentists-sleep physicians, who are accredited by the Dutch Association for Dental Sleep Medicine (NVTS).

We always make MRA braces for OSAS on referral from a doctor, such as a pulmonologist, ENT doctor or sleep doctor.

Digital impression with 3D scanner

To fit an MRA brace, we use a 3D scanner. This allows us to accurately and comfortably record your teeth digitally. In many cases, it is therefore not necessary to take a bite impression, which many patients find more pleasant.

Collaboration with sleep centers and referrers

We work closely with:

  • the Sleep Center of the CWZ hospital
  • Uniezorg

Patients who have been referred by other hospitals, clinics or doctors are also very welcome to contact us for the fitting and guidance of an MRA brace.

MRA brace for snoring (without apnea)

Even when there is no sleep apnea, but there is bothersome snoring, an MRA brace can be an effective solution. In that case, no medical referral is required. Together we assess whether this treatment is appropriate in your situation.

Annual check-up and broad guidance

The use of an MRA brace requires regular check-ups. We check patients annually to assess whether the brace still fits well, remains effective and does not cause any complaints to the teeth or jaw joints.

In addition, we pay attention to sleep hygiene, such as sleep habits and lifestyle. Where this can contribute to a better result, we work with lifestyle coaches or other healthcare providers where necessary.

Careful and personal approach

Fitting an MRA brace is always custom work. We take the time for:

  • a good fit
  • carefully adjusting the brace
  • guidance and evaluation in the long term

This is how we ensure a treatment that is effective, comfortable and safe.
